August Update

Howdy there, folks! 

I'm working out a bit of revamping with this blog and with my honey shop at PixiesPocket.com.  Between that, and canning up the garden as it's coming in, I've not had time to write. 

Bear with me, and until I'm back to creating content, I'm happy to share some awesomeness from other sources that you might not have seen!

Some Great Recipes

Cooking Comically:  These are excellent!  Tyler Capps creates simple but really good recipes drawn in comic form.  It's a great for getting the no-frills person in the kitchen to try their hand at making things, and he'll have a published book coming out soon.

Quinoa and Potato Curry: This is from the blog KaraPaints.  True, she does normally keep her posts to art-related topics, including a series teaching you (Yes, YOU!) how to paint with watercolors.  But even artists have to eat...so Kara made a nummy meal the other day and shared her recipe.

No More Herbalists on Etsy?

So, there are a lot of herbalists who are annoyed with Etsy due to new labeling requirements that are more stringent than the FDA requires, and are moving their wares to new venues.  If you are on that boat and want a new place to sell your products, or if you are an herbal shopper who is wondering where all the good stuff has gone, visit PoppySwap!

To that end, you will see me listing more bulk herbs and honeys on PoppySwap, and using Etsy for jewelry and divination listings. 

Quick update - the booze edition

Of course, when I do have a quick update, it's about booze. Go figure!

My apple mead/cider/cyser was a dud...it grew mold!  I must have opened it too many times, and also should have used a new gallon container instead of just dumping the must into the apple juice container.  Oh, well.  I'll mark that down for a lesson.

But! The good news is that I get to try my beer on Friday.  The Gaelic ale clone will be ready to open, and I am so excited!  I love beer.  I'm already plotting my next batch, which will likely be a porter.

I've been beset by a fit of crafting.  I made three pendulums last night, and am about to list those and a couple of embroidered patches on my Etsy.  I've decided while I'm hawking the honey at PixiesPocket.com, I might as well use the well-established Etsy space I've had since 2005 to move some of my odd craft bits.

Kara, the Awesome!

I am one lucky lady.

I received a package in the mail from a dear friend who I haven't seen in *mumblemumble* years...and a thrill of excitement flickered through me!

Kara was a buddy of mine during my very short stint in college.  She was the first person who I allowed to be my friend, the first person I could stop being afraid enough to talk to besides my roommate. Part of it was her colorful Doc Martins.  Part of it was her Navy blue pea coat. And part of it was her complementing my magazine cut-out of David Bowie in my orientation notebook as we sat cross-legged on the Quad, listening to helpful Seniors babbling about the history of the school.

We shared Play Analysis, and later, a Bitter Actress Tea Party.  We shared tea, and music, and it was in her room that I first discovered the world of Sandman and Neil Gaiman and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.  She giggles like a Muppet, and is adorable beyond compare! She is a crow, and a foxy lady. She is also a magnificent artist!

Every gift I've ever received from Kara is a treasure that I still hold dear:  the handmade luck stone with a raven and a rune, the Yule card stamped with her engraved art, and the crayon drawing of a fairy in a rainbow river she passed me in Play Analysis on my birthday.

And now, years later, here before me was a box from my sweet and wonderful friend.

Inside of this box was.....MORE BOXES. How awesome is that?  It makes the pleasure of opening gifts even more pleasurable.  I removed a small, green treasure chest, and a yarn-wrapped cardboard jewelry box, and an OOAK art card.  Each box contained one of her lovely handmade necklaces, beautiful collage charms that she sells on her Etsy shop, No Rabbits Here. 

The "Eat" apple charm made me squee for it is tiny and reminds me of the Snow White fairy tale. It makes me think of apple magic, of the star at the center of the apple when you cut it just right...of the health and earthiness of this luscious fruit. It makes me think of my time of year, the harvests of August and the early sweet apples that can be plucked from the trees and enjoyed immediately!

The "Virginia Beach" charm astounds me for it contains not only a portion of a map from the area that I was born, but also the smallest half-doily that I have ever seen. Her collage work is fabulous, subtle, and overall quite impressive!

Cayenne Honey?

Oh, yeah...it's warm. It's sweet. It's dangerously yummy...

Cayenne honey is made with sweet Appalachian mountain wildflower honey, blended with cayenne powder and poured over a bit of dried cayenne pepper that was grown organically.

This honey is hot, in a really sneaky way. It warms you in the throat and tummy before the heat really has time to settle in your tongue!

It's a good idea to add a honey like this to a tea when your sinuses are stuffed, or if you feel yourself coming down with a cold. Use it if you appreciate the heat cure for a compromised immune system.

Let's Talk About: Peppermint

If you want something quick and easy to grow that will spread like wildfire and provide you with a bounty of uses, might I suggest you plant a bit of mint?

Rapidly growing and even considered invasive by many, Peppermint has been part of medicinal gardens as long as we've had organized agriculture.

Menthol comes from peppermint, and it is a powerful medicinal ally! It isn't only good as a flavoring and a breath freshener, but that is how most folks are familiar with peppermint.

The wonder of mint goes way beyond candy canes. It can be used for many different things, both internally and externally:

Your Stomach

• When you've had too much to eat and you feel bloated and crampy, mint is great for releasing the extra pressure. In layman's terms, it will make you fart and burp like a human orchestra, much to the delight of giggling fools, like myself. 

• If you are prone to suffer from bad digestion, heartburn, nausea, or constipation, mint might be a suitable, gentle ally to ease your pain. I bet that you thought that the mints given out at restaurants was a subtle hint from the waitress about the oniony and garlicky food scenting your breath, didn't you?

• This is also the reason that mint jelly or mint sauce is traditionally served with lamb, as it tends to be gamey and tough. The peppermint aids in the digestion by increasing bile flow, which in turn helps to break down the meat.

Your Head

• Feeling Anxious? Panicked? Sweating under the collar and freaking out? A cup of mint tea, or even just a big sniff of mint essential oil is great for calming the mind. Breathe it in, hold your breath for four seconds, breathe out and let yourself relax.

• Stimulate your brain! Exam study sessions might stay with you longer if you have mint at hand. The crisp smell of spearmint or peppermint seems to sharpen focus and offer a sense of clarity during stressful times.

Your Hot Blood

• Mint is considered a "refrigerant" for your body...did you ever wonder why it's such a common thing to have a spring of mint in your iced tea? It doesn't just flavor your drink - it keeps you cooler in the hot summertime haze.

• This wonderful property also makes it an addition to a tea for lowering fevers. Mint also serves as a wonderful disguise for "stronger" flavors like horehound, valerian, and hops, making beneficial decoctions easier to share with those with less... um... sophisticated palates.

Your Aching Body

• Peppermint oil is used in balms and salves for it's analgesic and cooling properties. I can be both stimulating to the skin and it's blood flow, but cool any inflammation in the muscles. This makes it great for arthritis, especially when combined with camphor.

Your Home

• Since it is so strongly scented, mint is often a deterrent for mosquitoes. 

• If you forget your mint spray and get bitten, freshly crushed mint leaves or a salve can help with the itching!

• Dried, crushed mint leaves tend to be a deterrent for ants that try to invade your space. You can use tea bags as sachets in cabinets with pest problems.

I Love Spring!! An April To-Do List

April is here, and the Pisgah Forest is verdant and buzzing with life. The grass is growing, the earth is warming, and the mockingbirds and cardinals are waging war with one another in the berry brambles and honeysuckle! I'm just plain 'et up with loving the green haze of life everywhere and the droning hum of the bees on the breeze. We've been watching the ants, birds, frogs...all building, nesting, mating...GO TIME is here!!

We've been busy, too! Besides putting in volunteer and intern hours at the Western North Carolina Nature Center, Eric has been doing a great job of building us a cute little chicken coop out of pallets and spare lumber and bits of fencing that we reclaimed while driving around town. This picture is from about a week or so ago; the coop now has a wall for the front of it with a wee door cut in, and we have just acquired hinges for the back of the coop. It will swing open so we can have easy access to collect eggs and clean up the chicken poo.  We can't wait to get our hens!

Here's reprise of my To-Do list for March, updated now that we are moving into April!

• Build Chicken Coop (scrounged lumber, fence panels, pallets)  - MOSTLY DONE, just the hinges, a gangplank, and set it in the yard securely...there's birds of prey that live here so we have to get good bird netting as well.

• Set up rain barrel - We need a new barrel...our freebie-find barrel has small holes in it, on closer inspection. It may; however, turn into a compost barrel. 

• Modify pallets into Raised Beds - One down, three to go! Since we are gardening in the front yard now rather than the back lot, I might do more containers than planted beds. Got to stay flexible; plans always change. 

• Feed and work the compost pile - happy earthworms, scraps turning to dirt, all is well there. I fed it with some moo-nure and mushroom compost to help kick it up a notch.

• Herbal First Aid Class (March 15, 6-9pm @ AB Tech, Madison campus, Free!) 
• Healing From the Hive, Apitherapy Class (March 22, 6-9pm @ AB Tech, Madison campus, Free!)  I missed these two classes because of SNOW, and then SICK. BUT they are running again in May.

• Spring Garden School (March 20, 8:30-3:30 @ AB Tech, Ferguson Center, $10)  This class was awesome! I kept writing notes, paying attention, and waiting to get bored, but it didn't happen. I loved the presentation on the basics of growing in this zone, details on how to grow tomatoes effectively, container gardening, pest management, and edible landscaping. I also finally met Ashley English of "Design Sponge" and "Small Measures" fame! Yay!

• Continue to invest time in building and promoting my Etsy shop - sales are steady, and I'm progressing with making this REAL. Pixie's Pocket™ is in the process of becoming a legitimate legal business within North Carolina. I'm now advertising with Project Wonderful on awesome sites like Octopus Pie, and gaining followers on Twitter. I'm also proud to be a sponsor of the 2010 Think Green Fair in Rochester, MN!

• Invest time in my local community by joining farm markets and supplying local shops with my products - this is still in progress, and ever will be. Markets start soon and I am pretty sure I'll be helping Shannon Houn at House of Herbs with the Earthfare vendor market. 

• Gopher/Vole/Groundhog proof the garden beds & varmint-proof the Coop

• GET CHICKENS! 

• Buy local, heirloom veggies that will thrive here (zone 7b) - So far, I have hybrid bush cherry tomato and an heirloom "Mortgage Lifter" tomato seeds starting to sprout! Also, I will have basil coming out of my EARS...it's taking off like crazy! We will be waiting until May to put out summer veggies. I'll be direct-sowing lettuces and spinach tomorrow.

• Take other classes that come up that can help me with chickens, bees, gardens!! This list includes joining the WNC Beekeepers Association and the Asheville City Chickens Group. Also more free classes at AB Tech and other local presenters...more TBA!

So that's about it. Back to work scrubbing the kitchen floor and vacuuming up a winter's worth of slack...it sure does feel good to MOVE and STRETCH and wake up with the earth!

Think Green Fair 2010

The Pixie's Pocket™ has been invited to help sponsor the  "2010 Think Green Fair!"

The 2010 Think Green Fair will take place from 10am-9pm on June 26th, 2010 at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds, Graham Park in Rochester, Minnesota.

While I can't attend the fair personally, I will be sending the organizers a jar or two of honey to add to their raffle, as well as a stack of coupons (printed on recycled paper, of course!) for a discount at my Etsy shop.


Here's some details on the Fair from their official website:

"The Rochester Think Green Fair is designed to promote a healthier environment in the region by encouraging the local community to make more sustainable choices.

Through this one-day event we will celebrate simple and sustainable practices, products, and food. Examples will be shown on how day-to-day decisions impact our lives, neighborhoods, and world."

I was quite impressed by the promises they get from their food vendors - I've been to "green" festivals before and been given styrofoam and plastic to eat with, much to my dismay. The Rochester Think Green Fair is much more serious about living up to their ideals:

"At this year’s fair, we hope to reduce our footprint by working toward a goal of zero waste. Food and beverages served at the fair are judged by the origin and quality of their ingredients and production methods, as well as the materials in which they are packaged and served."

The person who invited me to sponsor this event was Crystal from "ScrubYourButt" which is an awesome name for a store that sells soap...and I plan on purchasing some of her products, too.

A couple of Notes!

Just so you know, my blog background, banner, and most of the photography on my blog are created by Sarah Thomas, from Modern Scribe Photography.  She now has an Etsy shop with adorable Pre-made banners, Etsy avatars, and other OOAK graphic design creations. She even does photo editing on demand...she can give you pointed ears or adjust lighting and background.

Sarah is also the designer for the brand new Asheville Etsy Street Team logo, as seen on Etsy and on their new Facebook page. Yay!

The Asheville Etsy Street Team is on the preliminary planning stages of a local Street Team show, probably in late summer, early fall of this year. As more details are set into stone, I will share them here. :)

Pixie's Pocket Spotlight: Cocoa Honey

Today, I had to whip up a whole new batch of what is quickly becoming one of the most popular items in the Pixie's Pocket shop!

And the excited customers are not wrong! The superbly decadent Dark Cocoa Honey is indeed a delight for the senses.

The magic begins with Haw Creek wildflower honey, which is gently warmed.  Then I slowly add the shaved 65% dark organic chocolate into the pan and watch them dissolve into each other...they dance and form beautiful swirls and spirals as I stir them together. 

After it is all joined together into a solid golden brown syrup and blended with the powdered dark cocoa, it is drizzled into the jars, onto a bed of cocoa nibs and Madagascar vanilla bean.

Once the Dark Cocoa Honey cools, it's texture is more reminiscent of frosting than honey - it is quite thick and creamy! It's great for toast, for heating and pouring over ice cream, for just about anything you put it on...which brings me to the most popular serving suggestion for the cocoa honey:

1. Warm the honey VERY gently; you can microwave the whole jar it by taking the lid off, putting it in for a mere couple of seconds, or you can put the jar into an empty, heatsafe bowl and pouring boiling water from a kettle into the bowl.
2. In both cases, please allow it to cool for a moment, and then test the temperature. 
3. Dip a soft paintbrush into the honey, and proceed to decorate the bare skin of your loved one's body! Hee hee...now make sure you clean up your mess!

This honey would make a great gift for a bridal shower, wedding gift, honeymoon suite appetizer, or any sort of experience where luxuriousness is the number one goal. Stop by The Pixie's Pocket and try some today!

Oh, March...you are going to be busy!

So far, March has been a damn sight better than February!

Now, mind you, we woke on Tuesday to snow that didn't stop falling until it was 6 inches! So we did the logical thing; played dress-up, went outside, and had Sarah direct a photo shoot of me mincing around in the tumbling snow! It was a great way to spend a cold, gray day - cause I can tell you, the fascination of just staring at the snowflakes gracefully falling went away about mid-December...

But this evening, as I gaze around, I see more green on the ground than the frosty white and muddy red clay. The birds are out thick everywhere, singing and fussing and picking the ground for the insects that are rousing. It has certainly been warm enough to imagine their reemergence - we were just at 60 degrees on both Saturday and this fine Sunday afternoon.

I left myself sleep in until 11am on Saturday...it's been a long week, after all! Post-coffee, I  set myself busy to making some Chai Honey. I have to fill the abundance of Etsy orders that poured in last week! Then I get the call that I have empty shelves at the local shop, the Candler, NC "House of Herbs."  I put three jars of honey in just about a week ago, and two of them have already sold!

Feeling motivated and accomplished, I put on jeans and boots and ambled down to the lower lot to poke around the future garden plot.  I turned the compost and found a couple fat and wriggling earthworms living in there. I welcomed them, thanked them for their hard work, and set off to work with Eric.  He has been checking our scrounged lumber, pulling apart pallets, and measuring out designs for the chicken coop.  As he worked away at our free lumber supply, I got busy picking up trash out of the dirt. It's something I do every time I visit the lower lot, yet I've only barely made a dent.

You see, whoever lived here before us wasn't as conscientious as we are with the disposal of trash...there's was a burn barrel that got dumped regularly. We are forever picking up bits of plastic and glass, metal cans, aluminum foil remnants - it seems like an inexhaustible supply of tiny trash bits that have malevolent intent and really want to stick in your finger when you pick it up!


Until we get the yard clean, raised beds are one of the garden projects that we'll be using the pallets for.  As we develop our plans, I'll be sure to post the progress...for now, here's our To-Do list for March:

• Build Chicken Coop (scrounged lumber, fence panels, pallets)
• Set up rain barrell
• Modify pallets into Raised Beds
• Gopher/Vole/Groundhog proof the garden beds
• Varmint-proof the Coop

MissusD makes adorable monsters!

Are you familiar with the art of amigurumi? It is Japanese for "OMG you KNITTED a tiny OCTOPUS! *squee*" or "You crocheted a kitten! Eeeeee!"

Seriously, amigurumi is amazing. And tiny. And very, very cute!

Recently, I became a fan of one such artist; the Crafty MissusD!  She maintains an Etsy shop, a Facebook Fan page, and regularly updates her blog, "Missus D."

She makes adorable amigurumi monsters, slugs that guard your keys, snails and their children, and even an amigurumi inspired by Bender from Futurama! How cool is that?

Her shop also features handmade hair clips and bows, and multi-hued batik notebooks.

In that post, she gives a mention to her favorite product from the Pixie's Pocket! I am honored that she could include our Chai Honey in that list!

Branching out...

It's real, ya'll...I'm here to testify.

Here I was, a sick, tired, sad little retail-worker - oppressed with corporate regulations and demands, exhausted from 10.5 hour days, worn out too much to do what I love and make the things that beg to exist from the pile of components in my craft closet...

So I quit.

In this day and age! Tsk. In this economy! The shame of leaving a steady, well-paying job tried to get me down, but you know what?

I'm so much happier without it!

Now, I still have my one Job of Awesome, and that is Biblio.com.  And I spend two or three days there a week, helping people find their dream books, or track their used textbooks, or walk a customer through an order. If you need a used book, try searching at Biblio - they offer carbon-neutral shipping, build wind farms, and start free libraries all through South America. It's an awesome, ethical company who supports the independent booksellers of the world who list with them.

Since I put my notice in two weeks ago at the evil corporate retail job, I have had three orders from my shop! I got business cards printed, and once the snow melts, I'll be going around and seeing who wants to carry my honey in their shops.
